Joey Calderazzo

Joey Calderazzo piano

A native of New Rochelle, New York, Joey Calderazzo first met Branford Marsalis when he visited friends at Berklee College of Music. Calderazzo’s work has been documented in three albums for Blue Note Records in the early 1990s, for Columbia Records, and for Branford’s Marsalis Music record label. He has been a Quartet and Duo partner with the saxophonist for over twenty years, and in 2011 released their album Songs of Mirth and Melancholy.

Joey Calderazzo studied classical piano from age eight, discovered jazz a few years later, and hit the big time when he joined Michael Brecker’s band in 1987, where he replaced Kenny Kirkland. Just over ten years later, Calderazzo replaced Kirkland a second time (after the pianist’s untimely passing) when he joined the Branford Marsalis Quartet. With firm roots planted in North Carolina, Calderazzo currently splits his professional time between teaching as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University, working with Marsalis and company, and pushing his own trio art to new heights.
