Julia Lockhart

Julia Lockhart bassoon

Julia Lockhart has been principal bassoon of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra since May of 2005. A native of Calgary, Julia first joined the VSO in 2002 as second bassoonist. She has also played with the CBC Radio Orchestra and been heard as a chamber musician on the CBC Radio Two program West Coast Performance.

In 2001, Julia graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music with a Bachelor of Music in bassoon and a Diploma in harpsichord. At Curtis she studied with renowned bassoonist Bernard Garfield, former principal bassoon of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Julia also attended Yale School of Music on a full scholarship, studying with Frank Morelli. Her other past teachers include Nadina Mackie Jackson and Michael Hope.

Julia has played in the bassoon sections of the Calgary Philharmonic, Victoria Symphony, New Haven Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and the Iris Chamber Orchestra in Memphis. She also appeared as soloist with the University of Toronto Chamber Orchestra, and performed frequently in the Curtis student recital series on both bassoon and harpsichord.
