Wu Wei sheng

Wu Wei is an avant-garde sheng soloist. He has helped to develop the four thousand year old ancient instrument into an innovative force in contemporary music, through the creation of new techniques, expanding the repertoire and integrating different styles and genres. His achievements have been recognised with the German folk prize, the Global Root award.

As Soloist he has collaborated with internationally renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, Flanders Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Lübecker Philharmonic, Westfalen New Philharmonic, Metropole Orchestra Holland and Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, working with conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Kent Nagano, Gustavo Dudamel and Ilan Volkov, and has appeared in many important international festivals such as Berliner Festspiele, Munich Biennale, Edinburgh International Festival, the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Musica Viva Munich, Warsaw Autumn, Suntory Music Foundation Summer Festival, Tokyo, Bartok Festival, Hungary, Achipel Festival, Geneva, Cologne Triennial, the Holland Festival, and Festival les Musiques, Marseille.

Among forthcoming highlights are, the French premiere of Unsuk Chin's Su (Concerto for Chinese Sheng and Orchestra) in Paris with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra under Myung-Whun Chung, and a tour of the work with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Myung-Whun Chung to Europe, Canada and the USA.

Wu Wei has given world premieres of more than 150 works (including 10 concertos for sheng) by composers such as John Cage, Unsuk Chin, Toshio Hosokawa, Jörg Widmann, Guus Janssen, Enjott Schneider, Qin Wenchen, Tan Dun, Chen Qigang, Guo Wenjing and Huang Ruo.

Wu Wei studied sheng at Shanghai Music Conservatory, becoming the soloist of the Shanghai Traditional Chinese Orchestra, before completing his studies in Berlin at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music with a DAAD scholarship.
