The complex beauty of VSO Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock’s Earthfall kicks off a concert that also features exceptional French violinist Alexandra Soumm’s take on French composer Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole. Lalo’s unique work, part symphony, mostly concerto, took Paris by storm with its Iberian flavours, sensual rhythms, and hints of Flamenco and Tango.

Robert Schumann was one of the most significant artists of his time, but not known for the quality of his orchestrations. However, his Symphony No. 4, heavily re-worked after initial drafts, became one of his greatest triumphs.

Perry So’s broad musical interests are reflected in his wide-ranging programming, including numerous world premieres on four continents and reintroducing works into the repertoire from the Renaissance and the Baroque. He has conducted productions of Mozart's Così fan tutte and Die Zauberflöte, Britten's Turn of the Screw, Handel's Giulio Cesare, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Bernstein's Candide, and Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus. His passion for working with young musicians has taken him to the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Round Top Festival, the Manhattan School of Music, the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts, and the Yale School of Music. www.perryso.com

Alexandra Soumm, a Franco-Russian violinist, has been making her name known among top European Orchestras and concert halls, and recently enjoyed celebrated debuts with the Detroit Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic (Hollywood Bowl), London Philharmonic, and Munich Symphony Orchestras. A former BBC 3 New Generation Artist 2010-2012, gold medalist of the Eurovision Competition for young musicians, and winner of the Grand Prize of the Vienna Conservatory Competition, Soumm has amassed a list of achievements beyond her age.
