Renowned Irish pianist Barry Douglas is a Vancouver favourite, and he brings a combination of power and grace to the piano that few can match. Douglas performs Rachmaninoff’s lush, Romantic Piano Concerto No. 2, quite possibly the best-loved piano work of all, with its famous melodies, dense virtuosic writing for the piano, and rich orchestral score.

Written in the Soviet Union during World War II, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 is nonetheless a glorious, uplifting work, as the composer himself describes: “I conceived of it as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit...praising the free and happy man—his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul.”

Lawrence Renes, having conducted many of the world’s greatest orchestras and opera companies in recent seasons, took up the post of Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera in August 2012. Guest engagements have included San Francisco, De Nederlandse, English National and Den Norske Operas, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Theatre Royal de la Monnaie, Teatro Nacional São Carlos in works as diverse as Das RheingoldElektra, The Rake’s ProgressThe Cunning Little VixenCarmenEugene OneginNixon in ChinaDoctor Atomic as well as the world premiere of Nuño Corte Real’s Banksters.

Barry Douglas has established a major international career since winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. As Artistic Director/Chief Conductor of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival, he continues to celebrate his Irish heritage while also maintaining a busy international touring schedule. Barry Douglas received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002. www.barrydouglas.com
