A prolific recording artist and champion of new works for percussion and orchestra, Dame Evelyn Glennie performs American composer Jennifer Higdon’s fascinating Percussion Concerto, a work that was written in 2005 for percussionist Colin Currie, and dedicated to him. The piece was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and was first performed in 2005, with Colin Currie as the soloist. It is an incredibly diverse, musically rich and exciting exploration of the various sonic possibilities of percussion with orchestra.

Maestro Tovey conducts in a program that also features one of the great symphonies of the 20th century, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. This work is filled with tragedy, fear, violence and emotion, but, finally, marked by the triumph of the human spirit over a crushing and oppressive regime.

Maestro Bramwell Tovey is the VSO’s longest-serving Music Director, entering his 18th and final season with the VSO in the 2017/2018 Season. Maestro Tovey’s accomplishments with the VSO, including touring, GRAMMY and Juno Awards, the VSO School of Music, the Orchestral Institute at Whistler, the many Music Education programs, and the artistic successes and growth of the orchestra will be celebrated throughout his final year as VSO Music Director.

Dame Evelyn Glennie is the world’s foremost solo percussionist, and a passionate advocate of music education. A double GRAMMY award winner and BAFTA nominee Evelyn is in demand as a composer in her own right and records high quality music for film, television and music library companies. The film ‘Touch the Sound’ and her enlightening TED speech remain key testimonies to her approach to sound-creation. www.evelyn.co.uk
