THE MUSIC:

The final concert of Maestro Bramwell Tovey’s tenure as VSO Music Director features a world premiere commission by Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock, and Mahler’s epic, stunning work of compositional genius, the ‘Resurrection’ Symphony No. 2. This work is a dramatic, emotional journey that in some ways echoes Beethoven’s Ninth. Sweeping in size and scope, the monumental symphony struggles with profound questions of life, death, and the afterlife, with equally profound writing and orchestration.

THE ARTISTS:

Maestro Bramwell Tovey is the VSO’s longest-serving Music Director, entering his 18th and final season with the VSO in the 2017/2018 Season. Maestro Tovey’s accomplishments with the VSO, including touring, GRAMMY and Juno Awards, the VSO School of Music, the Orchestral Institute at Whistler, the many Music Education programs, and the artistic successes and growth of the orchestra will be celebrated throughout his final year as VSO Music Director.

Erin Wall is acclaimed for her musicality and versatility, and sings an extensive opera and concert repertoire which spans three centuries, from Mozart and Beethoven to Britten and Strauss. She has sung leading roles in many of the world's great opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Vienna Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, and Lyric Opera of Chicago, and appears in concert with leading maestri and symphony orchestras worldwide. www.erinwall.com

Susan Platts, British-born Canadian mezzo-soprano, brings a uniquely rich and wide-ranging voice to concert and recital repertoire for alto and mezzo-soprano.  She is particularly esteemed for her performances of Gustav Mahler's works. In May of 2004, as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, world-renowned soprano Jessye Norman chose Ms. Platts as her protégée from 26 international candidates and she has continued to mentor her ever since. www.susanplatts.com
