    Peter and the Wolf!

    Saturday, February 4, 8pm, Orpheum Theatre

    Who cried “wolf?!” Not Prokofiev! His amazing fantasia on the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf is an extraordinary orchestral showcase in the grand Russian tradition. The epic Russian theme continues throughout this concert, with music by Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Glazunov – all under the baton of Maestro Bramwell Tovey, who will also narrate the story of Peter and the Wolf in his inimitable style!

    John Lill Plays Beethoven

    Saturday & Monday, February 18 & 20, 8pm, Orpheum Theatre

    Bramwell Tovey conducts John Lill, one of the world’s leading interpreters of Beethoven, in a performance of Beethoven’s stormy, Romantic Piano Concerto No. 4. A profound and highly personal musical statement, Elgar’s beautiful and intense Symphony No. 2 is described as “the passionate pilgrimage of the soul.”

    VSO POPS: Wicked Divas!

    Friday & Saturday, March 2 & 3, 8pm, Orpheum Theatre

    Broadway new and old, with New York Pops Conductor Steven Reineke, and the original stars of the long-running Broadway show Wicked. You’ll hear popular selections from Ragtime, Titanic, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked – even a selection from Monty Python’s Spamalot! – in a concert featuring Broadway’s top talents, Stephanie J. Block and Julia Murney.

    One of the most sought-after pianists of his generation, Benjamin Grosvenor makes his VSO debut performing Ravel’s luscious Piano Concerto in G Major. This delicious concert is all about exquisite French music, under the baton of VSO Assistant Conductor Pierre Simard.

    A very special Symphony Pops concert created by Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and Carla Heiney, 2010 National Jitterbug Champ and choreographer for the hit TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. Heiney and other top professional dancers will dance Swing, Waltz, Latin, Ballroom and Tap to the lush, full sounds of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

    Friday & Saturday, April 20 & 21, 8pm, Chan Centre, UBC

    VSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop conducts and performs in this exceptional concert that features some of the most beautiful and popular music ever written for string orchestra. You will be entranced by Mendelssohn’s sublime Octet, and Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Brandenburg Concerto No. 3.

    Critically-acclaimed pianist Peter Longworth is a concert pianist of power and grace. He will perform John Ireland’s beautiful impressionist Piano Concerto, in a program highlighted by Gilbert & Sullivan’s hilarious one act comic opera Trial by Jury, with G&S specialist Richard Suart – and of course, Maestro Bramwell Tovey.

    Known for his heart-on-his-sleeve style of playing, Jan Vogler performs the greatest concerto for cello and orchestra in a concert that also showcases the most beautiful of the four amazing symphonies written by Johannes Brahms. Christoph Koenig conducts.

    Internationally-acclaimed as one of the world’s very best trumpet players, Allen Vizzutti makes his much-anticipated return to the Orpheum stage with conductor Jeff Tyzik, performing an eclectic concert that includes Carnival of Venice, Aventure Español, An American Jazz Suite, selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, and more!

    The Magnificent Music of Bach and Mozart

    Friday & Saturday, May 18 & 19, 8pm, Chan Centre, UBC

    The magnificent music of Johann Sebastian Bach, his son CPE Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart fills the air, with conductor/pianist Jeffrey Kahane. Maestro Kahane performs JS Bach’s Concerto No. 1 in D minor and Mozart’s breathtaking Piano Concerto No. 25, in a concert that also features the beautiful sounds of Respighi’s Gli Uccelli (The Birds).

    Yevgeny Sudbin is a shooting star, and his passionate, thrilling performances take audience’s collective breath away and leave critics searching for superlatives. He performs one of Mozart’s most important (and brilliant) concertos, in a concert that also features the lush, beautiful music of Claude Debussy. Conducted by Kazuyoshi Akiyama.

    Last Night of the Proms

    Last Night of the Proms is an exciting concert tradition that began at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 1895. Maestro Bramwell Tovey, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Bach Choir proudly uphold that tradition in a fun and fantastic concert featuring Pomp & Circumstance, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and much more!

    A Hero’s Life

    Saturday & Monday, June 2 & 4, 8pm, Orpheum Theatre

    Referred to as “the most sensational young artist to emerge in Canada in a decade,” Jan Lisiecki is a superstar in the making. He performs Schumann’s delicious Piano Concerto in his Vancouver debut, while in the second half, Maestro Bramwell Tovey explores the rich treasure trove of music that is A Hero’s Life by Richard Strauss.

    Bramwell Tovey’s The Inventor

    Saturday, & Monday, June 9 & 11, 8pm, Orpheum Theatre

    Maestro Bramwell Tovey’s new opera The Inventor opened at the Calgary Opera in January of 2011 to great critical acclaim. John Murrell’s libretto tells the tragic story of Alexander (“Sandy”) Keith Jr., son of the famous brewmaster, with Tovey’s spectacular, dramatic score. The VSO presents the concert version of this new opera, featuring the original cast and, of course, Maestro Tovey conducting.
