Batubagen is a Khoomei overtone vocalist and Morin Khuur performer. Since 2006, he has been a member of the Band “Hanggai”.
Batubagen grew up in Inner Mongolia’s Bairin Right Banner, and gained insights of Khoomei overtone singing when he was sheep farming in his early years. Later, he furthered his studies with Khoomei Master Aodusurong, and has since been performing with Hanggai and alongside Tan Dun in a variety of different performances.
Batubagen has performed internationally in music festivals, including Rosekilde, Lowlands, Fuji Roc, Europe’s largest metal festival Wacken Open Air, WOMAD, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Vancouver Folk Music Festival, and Sydney Festival. He has also performed with major classical music orchestras and festivals including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Edinburgh Festival, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Festival, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, among others.
Laslty, Batubagen has led the Hanggai Band for two national musical awards in China, including the National Champion of Chinese popular reality music show Sing My Song in 2015, and the Best Folk Musician of the 11th Chinese Music Media Award in 2011.
