Julia Lockhart bassoon Julia Lockhart is principal bassoon of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. A native of Calgary, she began playing as an extra musician in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at age sixteen. Her teachers have included bassoonists Bernard Garfield, Nadina Mackie Jackson, and Jesse Read. Julia is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in bassoon and a Diploma in harpsichord, and her Master’s degree was completed through studies at Yale and UBC. A dedicated teacher, Julia was recently appointed as an Adjunct Professor of bassoon at UBC and has given guest master classes at the University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, Mount Royal University, and the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy on the Sunshine Coast. Julia was a founding member of the Harlequin Bassoon Quartet and has performed two tours of the BC interior with her reed trio. She has created and performed arrangements for solo bassoon with piano, with classical guitar, and for bassoon quartet. In her spare time, Julia enjoys gardening and creating mosaic art.
