Matthew Yep violin

Eighteen-year-old violinist Matthew Yep was the 2016 Senior Division winner of the VSO School of Music’s annual Future of Excellence competition, which promotes, celebrates and supports the aspirations and achievements of young musicians studying at the VSO School of Music.

Matthew began his violin studies at the age of five. He received his formative training with Paul Meister and later with Carla Birston, Chair of the String Department at the VSO School of Music. Matthew currently studies with David Gillham at the University of British Columbia, where he is pursuing a dual degree in music performance and computer science.

Matthew graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music with his ARCT Diploma in Violin Performance, receiving the National Gold Medal for earning the highest mark in Canada. As a winner of the VSO School of Music’s Future of Excellence competition, Matthew recently performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in a Tea & Trumpets series concert. He has also performed as a featured soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in the Elementary School Concerts series.

In 2015, Matthew had the privilege of performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins with concertmaster Dale Barltrop at the VSO Symphony Ball, and was co-concertmaster of the Whistler Institute Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Bramwell Tovey.

Previously, Matthew placed first at the BC Performing Arts Provincial Festival in the intermediate strings division. He was invited to perform in the gala concerts at the local and provincial levels. He is also a former winner of the Surrey Symphony Society’s concerto competition, where he performed the Vorspiel from Concerto for Violin No. 1 by Bruch.

Matthew has held concertmaster positions with the VSO School of Music Sinfonietta, Semiahmoo Strings, Surrey Strings, and the UBC Chamber Orchestra. He has had the opportunity to work with world-renowned artists including James Ehnes, Nicola Benedetti, Dale Barltrop, Martin Beaver, Gerald Stanick, Karen Gomyo, Ian Swensen and David Harrington.
