NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

The VSO NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL is a celebration of new creations, and leading edge works for a modern symphony orchestra. The 6th Annual New Music Festival, the first under the baton of Maestro Otto Tausk, features a new commission for VSO Principal Percussion Vern Griffiths written by Canadian composer Nicole Lizée, a world première commission by Canadian composer Emily Doolittle, the Vancouver premières of Become Ocean by John Luther Adams and Ocean Child by Jan Sandström. And the VSO is once again thrilled to present Vancouver’s own Standing Wave in concert as part of the New Music Festival. The VSO’s Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock curates and hosts in her inimitable and insightful fashion.

WATCH THE VSO WEBSITE FOR MORE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES about this exciting Festival – including new composers, new venues, pre-concert talks, post-concert lounges, and more artistic collaborations.

SPRING FESTIVAL

Music has power; music is the soundtrack to our lives, our history, and our culture. It resonates with the deeper rhythms of life; it sings of joy and sadness, of happiness and anger, of feelings and memories, of love and inspiration. Music plays to our deepest, most fundamental emotions in a more powerful way than anything else in our experience.

But there is a darker side. As much as music is a powerful force for positive change, it has been misused as well; appropriated and twisted, its power to influence and stir emotions abused for political ends, to control and indoctrinate and subvert. Music and power have always been linked, and in the 2019 VSO Spring Festival, we explore some of the times and places where music was used not just as a mirror on society, but as a force to change it in one way or another. From the times of the great world wars, to the Russian Revolution and the cultural politics of the Soviet Union and their ripple effects as far away as America, to the fall of the Berlin wall, we explore the central role that music can play in shaping our thoughts and emotions – for good or bad.

Join Maestro Otto Tausk and the VSO for this thrilling and fascinating exploration of Music and Power, featuring some of the greatest composers and compositions of our time.

Pre-concert talks each night at 7:05pm in the auditorium. Post-concert Q&A in the auditorium with Maestro Tausk following each performance.
