Program
Beethoven
Leonore Overture No. 3
Berlioz
La Mort de Cléopâtre
Bartók
Concerto for Orchestra
Approx. 105 Minute Performance
1 Intermission
Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 is a masterpiece in and of itself. Operatic conventions mix with distinctively heroic Beethovenian energy, ending in a jubilant celebration of love. By contrast, Berlioz’s La mort de Cléopâtre is a stark and heartbreaking cantata, performed here by the great Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee. The concert closes with Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of his most popular works.
Join us at 7pm on Saturday, November 5 for a special Prelude Concert with the VSO School of Music’s Sinfonietta.
