The musicians of the VSO are thrilled to be back to playing the series they curate, the VSO Chamber Players! It’s a joy to share this music in the intimate and acoustically-brilliant Pyatt Hall for four concert programs, each with an evening and matinee option.
Our February concert opens with Jocelyn Morlock’s Bird in the Tangled Sky, an early example of Jocelyn Morlock’s love of birds, and one of the first pieces to launch her international career. Mozart’s operatic and visionary Flute Quartet in A Major then leads to the great Canadian Claude Vivier’s haunting and colouristic quartet, Paramirabo.
The Bruch Eight Pieces were modelled after the same instrumentation in Mozart’s trio K.498, and was the first chamber music Bruch had written in 42 years. Valerie Coleman is an American composer and flutist who’s music is taking off all over North America, and her exciting piece Portraits of Langston is based on poems of the social activist and poet, Langston Hughes.
