The musicians of the VSO are thrilled to be back to playing the series they curate, the VSO Chamber Players! It’s a joy to share this music in the intimate and acoustically-brilliant Pyatt Hall for four concert programs, each with an evening and matinee option.
The October program opens with a beautiful piece by our dear friend Jocelyn Morlock, the former VSO Composer In Residence, and we celebrate her with two pieces on this year’s series. Then clever and rhapsodic works for strings by Rossini and Dohnányi, featuring some of our newest and most veteran musicians. The second half starts with a lyrical piece by Florence Price, and is followed by one of the great masterworks of the chamber repertoire, Brahms’ Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet.
Florence Price (1887-1953) was a prolific American composer whose race and gender kept her music from being recognized and regularly performed until recent years. Originally written for solo organ, Adoration is one of her final works and is notable for its gorgeous lyrical melodies. This arrangement, for clarinet and string quartet, allows us to bring this beautiful piece of music to Pyatt Hall.
The Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in b minor, Op 115 by Johannes Brahms is one of the most beloved chamber music masterpieces ever composed. The writing is sublime, exploring the unique colours of the various instrument combinations and expertly intertwining the clarinet with the string quartet sound. Listening to this autumnal music takes you on an incredible journey of deep introspection, melancholy, and remarkable beauty.
