An artistic collaboration between the VSO’s Indigenous Council & the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
The Path Forward begins with traditional dancing, drumming, stories and singing, followed by the VSO performing Carnival of OUR Animals, a Coast Salish reimagining for Saint-Saens beloved Carnival of the Animals, composer Ian Cusson’s Indigenous Songs from the House of Death, and a special performance of Chief Dan George’s Coast Salish Anthem. Interwoven throughout the afternoon will be poetry by Poet Laureate Christie Lee Charles as well as Indigenous contemporary music, art and fashion.
Four years ago the VSO convened an Indigenous Council as our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. The Council’s founding members were Chastity Davis, Chair; Alexander Dirksen, Metis Youth; Lillian Howard, Elder; Orene Askew, Squamish; Dennis Thomas, Tsleil-Waututh; Karen Gerbrecht, VSO Musician; Susan Anton, VSO Board. The Path Forward was imagined and developed by this creative group. The Indigenous Council is currently being chaired by Dennis Thomas and membership is evolving. It is with heartbreaking sadness that we very suddenly lost Elder Lillian Howard. As a gesture of our gratitude, deep love we are dedicating The Path Forward to Elder Lillian Howard.
