Rite of Spring

Approx. 90 Minute Performance

1 Intermission

All things spring! Maestro Tausk continues to explore the music of Schumann alongside one of the 20th Century’s most important musical works, Stravinsky’s scandalous The Rite of Spring. With its celebration of pagan ritual, there was a riot at its premiere. It is now recognized as a modern masterpiece.

Bloom is a new work by Japanese-Canadian composer Rita Ueda, and is a rare double koto concerto. Playing the koto is guest soloist Miyama McQueen-Tokita, who is known for her energetic and expressive music making.

Bloom and After Schumann were commissioned with support from the Hugh Davidson Fund through the Victoria Foundation.

“The work’s impact and popularity make it must-do repertoire for any conductor, and must-hear repertoire for orchestra aficionados.” – Read the full Vancouver Sun article here.

SURREY NIGHTS IS ENDOWED BY WERNER AND HELGA HÖING

The Friday March 10  and Sunday March 12 concerts are dedicated to the memory of Beth Orson, who passed away in December. Beth joined the VSO as Assistant Principal Oboe and English Horn in 1989 and was on faculty at UBC from 1993. She was a cherished member of our orchestra, an invaluable asset to the Vancouver music community, and a wonderful musician, teacher, and friend. We miss her very much, and always will. Thank you, Beth.

Join us at 6pm on Saturday at the Bell Performing Arts Centre for a prelude performance by the Semiahmoo Secondary Jazz combo.

Grateful to the Hoing Family for supporting music education in Surrey, and helping students connect with VSO and SoM education programs, workshops and lessons.
