New Music Festival

The VSO's 5th annual New Music Festival shines a spotlight on new creations, featuring great Canadian and international composers, renowned guest artists, and collaborations with Early Music Vancouver and Standing Wave. Curated by Maestro Bramwell Tovey and VSO Composer-in-Residence Jocelyn Morlock, the New Music Festival also features internationally renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

The musical forces at the festival range from a full orchestra, on down to a baroque-sized ensemble, chamber works and an intimate cabaret. Alongside world premieres by James O’Callaghan, Rodney Sharman, Bramwell Tovey, Leslie Uyeda, Marcus Goddard, and Jocelyn Morlock, the festival celebrates the raw energy and wild colouristic possibilities of music being written in the 21st century, even as it, in many cases, harkens back to music from earlier eras.

Among many other works being presented are recent Canadian compositions by Vincent Ho, John Estacio and Samy Moussa, alongside those of internationally recognized icons such as Louis Andriessen, Alfred Schnittke, Nico Muhly, Anna Cline, and Kaija Saariaho. Explore all of the inspired offerings in this, the five-concert VSO New Music Festival for 2018.
