The VSOI is a world-class summer music program taking place virtually and in-person at the VSO School of Music, from July 4th, offering students aged 14-28 a one-of-a-kind experience. The VSOI faculty is comprised of VSO musicians and led by Maestro Otto Tausk, Music Director of the VSO.

The VSO Institute

The VSOI is a world-class summer music program taking place virtually and in-person at the VSO School of Music, from July 4th, offering students aged 14-28 a one-of-a-kind experience through three connected programs:

  • Professional Training Program
  • Young Musicians Program
  • In-Person Chamber Program

The VSOI faculty is comprised of VSO musicians and led by Maestro Otto Tausk, Music Director of the VSO.

Applications are open to all orchestral instruments including harp, plus saxophone, conducting, and composition.

Jaclyn Rainey: French Horn Masterclass on July 8, 2022

Jaclyn Rainey is the Principal Horn of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, and the Sarasota Orchestra. Ms. Rainey is an Artist affiliate at Emory University, and has served on the faculty of Georgia State University.  


Virtual VSOI: Professional Training Program

July 4-15, 2022

The VSOI Professional Training Program offers in-depth performance and mentorship experiences for advanced instrumentalists, conductors, and composers aspiring to a career in music.

  • Ages 15-28
  • Mentorship by our talented faculty of VSO musicians
  • Masterclasses with ample opportunities to perform
  • Interactive webinars on a variety of topics including daily practice, warm-up class, performance practice, career development, musician health and wellness, repertoire, and instrument-specific topics
  • Chats and special presentations with VSO Music Director Otto Tausk
  • Masterclasses with world renowned guest artists
  • Mock Auditions
  • An option for private lessons with faculty
  • Access to the VSO’s digital concert hall, VSO Online and virtual learning zone, The Music Room
  • Scholarships available
  • Students can expect between 1 and 3 hours of programming on most days during the two-week timeframe. Schedules will take into account the time zones of where our students are located to encourage the participation of our international applicants.

Virtual VSOI: Young Musicians Program

July 4-15, 2022

The VSOI Young Musicians Program is designed for dedicated intermediate and advanced high school instrumentalists looking to improve their skills, explore their interests, deepen their experience with music, and spend time with other like-minded students

  • Ages 14-18, intermediate and advanced high school instrumentalists with at least 2 years playing experience
  • Mentorship by our talented faculty of VSO musicians and VSO School of Music faculty
  • A series of Performance Fundamentals classes and Masterclasses for each instrument
  • Interactive webinars on a variety of topics including daily practice, warm-up class, musician health and wellness, repertoire, and instrument-specific topics
  • A virtual ensemble experience focusing on performance, creation, and collaborative musicianship
  • Opportunities to audit/observe masterclasses and other classes of interest in the Professional Training Program
  • A private lesson with VSOI faculty
  • Access to the VSO’s digital concert hall, VSO Online and virtual learning zone, The Music Room
  • Limited scholarships available

VSOI In-Person Chamber Program

July 4-July 30, at the VSO School of Music

Students residing in the Greater Vancouver area are invited to apply for the In-person Chamber Music Program, based in the state-of-the-art facilities at the VSO School of Music. The Chamber Program concludes with performances in Pyatt Hall on July 29th and July 30th. 

In order to participate, enrolment in either the VSOI Professional Training Program or VSOI Young Musicians Program is required.

  • Chamber groups (strings, winds, brass, percussion, with COVID-19 protocols in place) will rehearse in preparation for a performance in Pyatt Hall
  • 3-4 Coaching sessions from VSO musician faculty members
  • Performance opportunities
  • The VSO’s and VSO School of Music’s Covid-19 Safety Plans have been approved by provincial health authorities.

Chamber Program Scheduling

The In-Person Chamber Program launches at the start of the virtual institute, with groups having the option to meet during the weekend of July 2-3. During the 12 days of the institute, ensembles are free to rehearse and get a start on their repertoire. After the online institute has concluded, the Chamber Program will run intensively from July 16th-29th. Most rehearsals and coachings will take place during these 2 weeks.
