StravinskyPlus: Celebrating the 100^th Anniversary of
The Rite of Spring

Maestro Tovey and the VSO present a two-week celebration of the music of Stravinsky and the Russian Masters, celebrating the 100^th anniversary of the Paris debut of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. In these two weeks, you will hear Stravinsky’s astonishing music from his three major ballets: The Rite of Spring, The Firebird (1919), and Petrouchka (1947), in addition to great music by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov – two composers who greatly influenced (and in Rimsky’s case, taught) Stravinsky and his compositions. The debut of The Rite of Spring was a seminal moment in music history, and it is a composition that changed classical music forever. The Rite of Spring still retains its power to shock and amaze, and it boldly echoes down through a century of composition. Bramwell Tovey conducts.

Concerts include:

Saturday & Monday, June 8^th & 10^th, 8pm, Orpheum: Rimsky-Korsakov Le coq d’or: Introduction and Wedding March, Stravinsky The Firebird (1919), Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with violinist Baiba Skride.

Sunday, June 9, 7:30pm, Orpheum Annex: Stravinsky L’Histoire du Soldat, Schoenberg Pierrot Lunaire.

Saturday & Monday, June 15^th & 17^th, 8pm, Orpheum: Season Finale, Stravinsky Fireworks, Petrouchka (1947), The Rite of Spring.
