Secondary Connects

VSO Connects Secondary supports and enhances music education for secondary students across the Lower Mainland through immersive, curriculum-aligned learning experiences led by Vancouver Symphony Orchestra musicians. Meeting students where they are in their musical journey, the program fosters artistic and personal growth by expanding their skills, experiences, and understanding. 

Focused on deepening students’ musical understanding and performance skills, the program offers a series of modules that scaffold and integrate experiential learning, mentorship, and professional exposure. Students will engage in hands-on activities that complement their classroom instruction and ensemble practice, fostering both artistic growth and personal development. 

Through the VSO Connects program, students will have a unique opportunity to closely observe and learn from VSO musicians, deepening and enriching their music education. The participating ensemble will engage in the following modules: 

Module 1: Meet the Ensemble

Students enjoy a live performance by VSO musicians showcasing chamber music and introducing lesser-known instruments. After the performance, musicians join the students in rehearsal, playing alongside them and offering personalized guidance. This interactive session provides a rare opportunity for students to learn directly from professionals, ask questions, and experience hands-on musical growth. 

Module 2: Fundamentals Clinic

In this focused one-hour session, VSO musicians work with students in instrument-specific groups to explore core playing techniques. Topics may include tuning, alternative fingerings, and healthy practice habits, providing students with practical tools to support their musical growth. 

Module 3: Sectionals with VSO Musicians

Building on skills from the Fundamentals Clinic, this module applies new techniques directly to the students’ current repertoire. VSO musicians will guide students through challenging passages, offering targeted suggestions and musical insights tailored to each instrument section. 

Module 4: Rehearsal with Maestro 

Integrating concepts learned in previous sessions with VSO musicians, this full ensemble rehearsal offers students a rare opportunity to apply their skills under the direction of a guest conductor. Through this experience, students gain valuable insight into professional rehearsal techniques, ensemble communication, and musical interpretation from a fresh and inspiring perspective. 

Module 5: Symphonic Encounters Open Rehearsal

Students attend a VSO open rehearsal, gaining firsthand insight into professional orchestral work. The experience includes a Q&A with VSO musicians and, for select students, a unique on-stage perspective during the rehearsal. 

Module 6: Explore Beyond!

Tailored for students interested in post-secondary music studies, this session covers topics like audition preparation, music careers, and healthy practice habits—offering tools to support long-term musical growth.
