Bio

Thalia Navas joins the Vancouver Symphony as Second Bassoon for the 2023/24 season. Most recently, Thalia held a one-year appointment as Second Bassoon with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. An Ottawa native, she has performed on numerous occasions with the National Arts Centre Orchestra as a substitute, Mentorship Fellow in 2022, and concerto soloist in 2019. Recent summer engagements include a fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2022 and an invitation to the Hidden Valley Festival of Winds in 2021.

In 2020, Thalia was announced as a semifinalist in Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s annual Concours. Her other accolades include 1st Prize at the 2019 National Arts Centre Bursary Competition, Most Outstanding Bassoonist and finalist in the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Audition in 2022, Honorable Mention in the 2021 Meg Quigley Vivaldi Symposium, and finalist in the 2023 International Bassoon Excerpts Competition. In 2019, Thalia toured internationally with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and took part in the New York String Orchestra Seminar directed by Jaime Loredo.

Thalia recently earned her bachelor’s degree at The Juilliard School where she was a student of Kim Laskowski. In her free time, she enjoys finding the best food in town, rock climbing, and spending time with her dog Enzo.
