1 Intermission

Alessio Bax, described as “Perhaps the most elegant of today’s young pianists” (The New York Times), joins conductor Han-Na Chang in Liszt’s effervescent First Piano Concerto. Opening with tragic drama, Brahms’ romantic Fourth Symphony culminates in a triumphant conclusion brimming with lyrical beauty. Inspired by the complex flows of a mighty river, Tansy Davies’ Plumes is a dance of two elements; a duet between air and water.

Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 is performed in loving memory of Doug Sparkes (1948-2024), former VSO Principal Bass Trombone and husband to Natasha Boyko, VSO Cello.
