The Return of Live Musical Experiences
The arts have been devested by the 18 month closure brought about by the pandemic. Your investment now will help the VSO recover from its $7 million loss and ensure this beloved 103-year cultural beacon can thrive and provide irresistible performances, music education and community initiatives for todays and future generations to enjoy.
Wherever the venue, be it a physical or virtual concert hall, an outdoor stage in a park, a classroom or a seniors home, artistic excellence is at the heart of everything we do—creating, curating and connecting irresistible musical experiences—serving more than 600,000 adults, youth and young children.
The VSO and VSO School of Music pivoted to digital performance and learning to keep the music playing and support people’s emotional well-being during isolation. Those are services we will continue to offer to expand our reach and serve a new community of music-lovers and learners gained during the closure—province-wide, nationally and globally. School Districts province wide subscribed to our virtual learning hub, and shut-in seniors enjoyed performances from the comfort and safety of their homes through our digital concert hall.
For tots to seniors, the VSO offers robust education programs. Did you know the VSO is one of just a few orchestras in the world to have it’s own music school? We offer studies in classical, voice, jazz, traditional Chinese and world instruments. Our Early Childhood Development programs and music camps are filled to capacity. The joy of learning is open to all and bursary programs help to ensure inclusivity and accessibility. Instruction is available for beginners and life-long learners to those looking to make music a career, having access to VSO musicians and international artists for world class tuition and masterclasses.
Music is a language that helps us express ourselves when words fail. It brings joy, comfort, dignity and understanding. It supports our mental health. You may not know that we offer free music lessons for underserved youth; free outdoor summer concerts; programs for kids on the autism spectrum or with neurodiverse conditions; performances for seniors in long-term care or inmates in prison; we curate an annual free Day of Music with over 100 community and professional
music groups participating. We are working on a Path Forward project with our Indigenous Council to play our part in truth andreconciliation. Music heals.
