Iconic Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin performs one of Mozart’s finest concertos – a concerto that perhaps should be called the “Starling” concerto, for the famous (and actually true!) story of Mozart’s pet bird that could sing the principal theme of this concerto’s finale.

Xian Zhang, one of the great rising conductors on the international podium today, makes her debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Symphony No. 2.

Zhang first conducted the China National Opera Orchestra at the age of 19 and went on to be conductor-in-residence of the China Opera House in Beijing and the Jinfan Symphony Orchestra. She leapt onto the international stage as assistant conductor to Lorin Maazel at the New York Philharmonic before taking on a number of firsts. She was the first woman to conduct the Staatskapelle Dresden in its principal hall, the first woman named music director of an Italian symphony, and the first woman named director of a BBC orchestra. Xian Zhang is currently music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Have a listen to Maestra Zhang leading the BBC Wales Orchestra in Beethoven’s 9th at the BBC proms.

Arrive early on Sunday for a special performance by VSO School of Music students at 1:15pm.
